About Juanita Ulloa
World-Class Mariachi and Opera
In a review of her trendsetting Mujeres y Mariachi CD, singer-songwriter, Juanita Ulloa, has been hailed as the High Priestess of Operachi by Hispanicpress.org. She has likewise been honored as an ”artist in a class of her own” (along with Santana) by Mark Halstern of Hispanic Magazine. Juanita is one of the world’s leading female singer/composers of Mexican “ranchera” music (mariachi), along with Latin American folk music and art song. She tours nationally and abroad as a concert performer and offers master classes championing the growth of women's contributions to Latin American arts.
Ms. Ulloa holds music degrees from Yale University (BA, Music) and the University of California at Berkeley (MA, Music) and has additional post-graduate training from the Nice Conservatory in France, Cal State Hayward, San Francisco State University, and Cal State Humboldt in Arcata, CA.
Juanita has performed regional opera in Northern California with Pocket Opera, West Bay Opera, Berkeley Opera, Sacramento Opera, and Mother Lode Musical Theater Company, among others. She also does voice-over work for both commercial and educational entities including Bank of America, Mailboxes, etc., MacMillan/McGraw-Hill, Scholastic Books, MelBay Publications and Silver,Burdett, Ginn (Pearson Music). She is also an ethnomusicologist specializing in Latin American music and Hispanic vocal styles. Currently, she teaches music at Texas State University (San Marcos, Texas), University of Texas (San Antonio), and Northwest Vista Community College in San Antonio, Texas.
Ms. Ulloa appears with both mariachis worldwide and with symphony orchestras, including the Stockton and Oakland Symphonies in Northern California, Pasadena Pops and La Jolla Chamber Orchestra in Southern California, and the Macon Symphony in Georgia, among others. She has toured Spain, France, Mexico and Peru, concertizing twice in the Ateneo Hall in Madrid, plus folk festival appearances around Spain and Peru as a solo vocalist. In July, 2008 she shared a program in the Ateneo Hall as part of Patricia Caicedo's Barcelona Festival of Song. In February, 2009 she releases the world's first ever Mariachi for kids & families CD "Canta mi son!" (Sing my song!) at the International Toy Fair in New York City, NY.
